¡±From South to North¡± Development Strategy of Ya¡¯an black tea

The production techniques of Ya¡¯an Tibetan tea were passed from generation to generation mainly by the traditional artisans in the tea factory dictating to younger workers during tea processing. It wasn¡¯t until modern times that the techniques were recorded in characters.  

In 2002, seven national ministries and commissions assigned 25 enterprises to produce the brick tea, 6 of which were in Ya¡¯an, accounting for 1/4 in the country.

In 2005, there were 15 enterprises producing Tibetan tea in Ya¡¯an, 6 of which were assigned by the state. At present, 10 enterprises have gained QS certification with the leading products ¡°Hei Kui¡± ¡°Kang Zhuan¡± ¡°Jin Jian¡±. In 2007, the aggregate tea output in Ya¡¯an reached 56000 tons, nearly 30000 tons of which were Tibetan tea, accounting for 80% of the brick tea output in the whole province and 40% in the country. 60% of its brick tea were conveyed to Tibetan area, about 9% to Qinghai and Gansu Province, around 20% to Ganzi and Aba¡ª¡ªthe southwestern part of China, and nearly 12% to the mainland of China.

At the beginning of 2008, the traditional production technique of Ya¡¯an Tibetan tea(the brick tea) was listed as the second batch of state-level non-material cultural heritage. At the beginning of 2010, the first ¡°Institution for imparting and learning Ya¡¯an Tibetan tea(the brick tea)¡± was founded in Ya¡¯an Friendship Tea Co.,LTD. In September, 2011, the Ministry of Culture released the list of the first batch of state-level non-material productive protection demonstration base. There were three ¡°non-material¡± enterprises in Sichuan Province on the list and Friendship Tea Co.,LTD(for its production technique of the brick tea) was one of them.
